There are so many pieces of artwork to choose from when pairing art with nursing. I chose this photo because I feel like I connected with it and it seems relevant in the times we live in. When I think of nursing and art together, I think of care, compassion, thought and therapy. A nurse must be all of these things and art usually contains all of these things. In this specific piece, I see all these things. I saw this photo during quarantine when nurses all over the world were being honored for their bravery during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this photo a little boy holds up a stuffed nurse from his toy basket instead of grabbing one of his superheroes. So often we assume that children don’t pick up on who is being brave, but this photo proves that to be wrong. This boy chose the nurse to be his superhero. Nurses everyday care for patients and help them heal and hurt. They should be honored often for the work they do. When I was a young girl, I remember going to the hospital to visit my cousin who had cancer and would look up to all the nurses. They seemed so fun, yet had such a huge role to play. Nurses are caregivers and friends and are such a big part of someone’s healthcare experience. They have so much knowledge and care for patients big and small, young and old. This photo, to me shows just how much a superhero a nurse is.

  1. Great selection. I saw this drawing very recently and agree that it is delightful to see this child honoring this toy in such a manner. I enjoyed hearing how it has impacted on your thoughts as well. Nice job!

  2. The artwork you choose stuck out to me because of the way the nurse was portrayed as a superhero. I thought this was a clever way of portraying what nurses do and mean for people. They are always there to help those in need and truly save lives. You artwork showed a child choosing to the play with the nurse action figure over the others. This was a different way of describing a nurse from my artwork. I think this art really showed that nurses are held in a high regard and valued. As a nurse we are real life hero’s and put the patients care first.

  3. Hi Roxy! I love the photo you chose! Especially during COVID, this photo speaks very loudly because it shows how detrimental nurses are to the population. I like how the image is of a young child choosing the nurse as his superhero, because it demonstrates how younger children are able to see the importance of healthcare workers, especially during a pandemic. Your piece of artwork is different from mine because this photo focuses on the importance of nursing and their role, while mine was more focused on the type of connection they can make with patients. I also liked that you said, “they have so much knowledge and care for patients big and small, young and old,” because it explains that nurses have so much diversity in the type of people they care for. A nurse can play a role in everyone’s life as they provide care in all stages of life.
