Learning Outcome 4

I have been doing peer reviews for awhile now. I learned how to do peer reviews in middle school and have continued to use peer review as an editing technique. I think that I do well in peer reviews. I try to leave useful comments but also make sure to leave comments that compliment the writer. In high school when my teachers would go over my papers, they would often leave only critiquing comments and that sometimes decreased my confidence of the paper. In English 110 we have been taught to leave a variety of comments in the margins. We use both global and local revisions to help us with our comments. My teacher always pushed us to leave more comments than we thought we should in the margins.  I found that in all my peer reviews I tried very hard to leave comments that would help the writer improve their work. We almost always had to write notes to our peers after editing their essay to summarize what we think of their work. I really thought that leaving this note was helpful for everyone. It was a place for me to bring all my ideas about the writing together and leave a clear helpful note for my peer to read. After looking back through my peer reviews I feel that my comments have gotten stronger throughout the semester. Some of my comments are “strong thesis, or confusing sentence or add a quote, etc.” I try to put a variety of comments in the margins. We focused on claim sentences and theses in class so I almost always commented on these sentences. Not only did we just leave comments on our peers papers, but we met in groups to discuss each others work. I think that doing this was useful because you could ask peers specific questions and get/give your opinion on the essay. All aspects of peer review have a way to make a paper stronger. Peer reviewing is such a useful tool and I think that we used it to our advantage in English 110. We spent lots of time peer reviewing and I think that this time only benefited us. It is amazing how much change you can get from editing an essay.
