I feel that I do tell my life in stories. I think that stories are easy to understand so when I am talking to someone that doesn’t know me very well it is easy to communicate in stories. I think that there are both pros and cons to having a life story. I have never felt that I have to have a story to talk about my life, I just find myself using stories to narrate my life. I feel that life stories can leave important parts of your life out, “we have at best bits and pieces, rather than a story.” Life is told through summary more than story, at least this is what I think. We also only tell others what we want, we are in control of what we say. This can change someone’s view on who we are. “‘I have always lived very much in the present, remembering only what seemed to be worth retelling.’” We only remember what we want, and only tell others what we want. I think that this is one of the negatives of making our lives a story. It either all needs to be incorporated, the good and the bad, or tell no story at all. I think that it is hard, especially nowadays to have oneself. We all have multiple selves. I wish that I could have oneself, I try very hard to be the same person around everyone but it can be hard. We act differently around different audiences. “Various selves. . . make up our composite Self.” At the end of the day, we are one person, but we have different versions of ourselves. I try to be the same because I want everyone to know me as me.

  1. I liked your insight on Strawson when he stated that life stories don’t always include small details of your life and often just focus on the large events or memories in your life. I agree with you and didn’t pick up on this when I was reading his article. Also, I liked how you further described how we try to be different versions of ourselves to different people and its hard for people to truly know who you are.

  2. You are exploring some pretty deep topics here. I think you could honestly argue either side in your paper based on how you approached this response. You could develop how narrative can be harmful because it is so selective in an anti-narrative, or you could talk about how narrative is key to communication in a pro-narrative argument. You have some good ideas here. Good luck!

  3. Excellent. Your annotations look amazing, and your reflection leads down some interesting avenues. I can see that you are working hard to examine all sides of the issue. Well done!
