My reading experiences changed from the first time reading Erards essay to the second. The first time I read I read through the essay and highlighted and commented on different parts, the more simple parts. When I read for the second time, I knew what the essay was about so when I read I focused more on the detail and read the text more closely. After reading for the second time, I compared my comments and realized that my first comments were basic whereas my second comments were more specific. I found myself feeling the same way about the essay once I finished but I felt that after I read the essay for the second time I understood the essay and the details that we hidden in it. I think that rereading any material always helps to clarify things and just cements the topic more in your head. I feel that I know what was covered in this essay pretty well after reading it multiple times. I usually don’t reread things unless I am confused by something, but after doing this assignment I think that I am going to find my self rereading work more often.

I do think that glossing the text helped me understand the text more because, as I said after reading the essay for the first time I just had the basis of what it was about, but now I have a more in depth sense of what Erard was trying to convey. Also while I was “glossing the text” I was looking for terms that I didn’t know which made me focus on the reading more. I think that this is a good technique because you can learn about terms you are unsure of while you are reading. In the very beginning, Erard talked about FrameWorks Institute, where he used to work. I researched FrameWorks Institute because I found it interesting the a metaphor designer was a job. FrameWorks Institute conducts research on different topics to inform the public. FrameWorks also helps organizations expand business. After “glossing the text” and rereading this essay I feel that I have a better understanding of not only the reading but of terms that were new to me.

  1. I am, of course, thrilled that you plan on applying what you learned from this rereading experience to future texts. Moving forward, I won’t often require students to reread essays. (Sometimes, I will. It depends on time.) This is why I think it’s important to ask students to experience the benefits in the beginning weeks of class. This way, you can decide for yourself!

I was so interested to see that you looked into the FrameWorks Institute. I’ll confess, I have not looked into the organization until now. What a fascinating place to work!
